The Ubuntu.Lab journey

Ubuntu.Lab is an eight-month applied online-offline learning program for change-makers, emerging and established leaders and innovators.

The core ingredients of the program are:

  • Hubs, where the participants will join a learning space which will be their primary point of connection for the learning process. These hubs will organise 9 half-day face-to-face sessions over the period of the program. Every face-to-face session will have 2 parts: (1) 90 minute Live Sessions: a live broadcasts that are attended by all hubs and participants across Africa at the same time. And (2) Conversation and application within the local hub. In between the face-to-face meetings, participants will spend an average of 3 hours a week to apply the insights in their daily and work.

  • Ubuntu-Cafés: Once a month, there will be a 60 minutes online Ubuntu-Café, which is an open space for participants to engage in dialogue on any issue they consider to be important to them. Though Ubuntu-Café is not mandatory, participants are strongly encouraged to attend as often as they can.

Live sessions, Ubuntu.Cafes and Facilitators Calls are hosted on Zoom

(1) The 9 face-to-face sessions

These 9 hub meetings run +/- 4 hours, with the following suggested process:
  • 30 minutes check-in

  • 90 minutes live session

  • 120 minutes conversation, practice and application

Ghana/Liberia

9 am - 1 pm with live session @ 9.30 am

UK/Nigeria/Cameroon

10 am - 2 pm, live session @ 10.30 am

Zambia/Malawi/Egypt/South-Africa/Rwanda/Zimbabwe/Lesotho/Namibia (winter/summer time!!)

11 am - 3 pm with live session @ 11.30 am

Kenya/Tanzania/Uganda/Ethiopia

12 pm - 4 pm with live session @ 12.30 pm

(2) The 6 Ubuntu Cafés

These Ubuntu Cafés are 60 minutes online dialogues, during which an open space is created for participants to engage in dialogue on any issue they consider to be important to them.

(3) In between sessions-work

On average, participants will spend 3 hours on homework per week, which we call 'in-between-session-work', to avoid associations with the traditional classroom.

This work could be to

  • watch a video (introducing content or a instruction for practice)

  • do some practices; depending on phase in the Ubuntu.Lab process, these practices could be to go out and engage in stakeholder Interviews, learning journeys or an empathy walk.

  • reflect on the content and experiences

  • harvest learning and experience and share with community (1/month)

  • to do a coaching Circle (1/month)
